HFCL, a domestic telecom gear company, announced on Tuesday that it has secured an order worth Rs 179 crore from BSNL to supply 4G and 5G network equipment. Out of this, Rs 141 crore is for capital expenditure and annual maintenance contract. The company will provide products and services crucial for supporting BSNL's 4G and 5G network requirements, including planning, surveys, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of microwave links.

"We submit that such comments and demands are rhetoric in nature and ignore the severe impact on existing customers from a network shutdown through regulatory mandates," Vi said in a counter response to Jio's comments on a consultation paper for promoting 5G transformation, published by the regulator.
'Free data a headwind against 5G monetisation': Bharti Airtel MD Gopal Vittal
Gopal Vittal, MD of Bharti Airtel, expressed concerns that offering unlimited free 5G data could hinder the monetization of this next-generation technology. He dismissed the idea of implementing differential pricing for 5G, noting that only a small fraction of customers would opt for higher-priced plans. Despite having over 65 million 5G subscribers, Vittal acknowledged that this segment represents a modest proportion of the overall smartphone user base, approximately 15-16%.
Vi plans to launch 5G in six months, post-funding
Vi plans to launch 5G services in 6-7 months and expects more clarity on 5G monetisation by then. The telco will switch off its 3G network in FY25 and refarm airwaves in the 2100 MHz band for 4G. Vi has shut down 3G services in some areas and is in discussions with technology partners for the 5G rollout. The company is also exploring advanced technologies like vRAN & ORAN. Jio has completed its 5G rollout nationwide, while Airtel is set to do so by March. Vi continues its fundraise discussions and is considering selling fibre assets and in-building solutions.

India's telecom secretary, Neeraj Mittal, has launched the Bharat 5G Portal, an integrated portal for all quantum, IPR, 5G, and 6G-related works. Mittal said India's 5G rollout is among the fastest in the world and the country has the second largest telecom network. He also facilitated investment for startups in the telecom sector, launching a special meeting session titled "Bridging Dreams and Funding: Linking Venture Capital/investors to the Future of Startups."
